Nausea and vomiting can occur while getting chemotherapy, right after, or many hours or days later. You’ll most likely feel better on the days you are not receiving chemo. Here are 9 tips for managing your nausea:
1. Use a journal to record what causes your vomiting and nausea. Discuss this with your doctor or nurse.
2. Take your scheduled anti-nausea medicine, even if you are not feeling nauseous at that time.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for a medicine change. If the current mediciness do not work well for you, there are many other kinds of anti-nausea medicines that can help.
4. Snack more. Eat 4 to 5 small, high-calorie, high-protein meals per day rather than three big meals.
5. Avoid extreme foods. Do not eat sweet, fatty, spicy or strong-smelling foods.
6. Take a bite out of nausea. Eat slowly and chew food well for easier digestion.
7. Be a camel. Drink 8 – 10 cups of fluid per day to prevent dehydration.
8. Avoid lying down immediately after eating.
9. Distract yourself. Listen to music, watch a favorite TV show or play a game.
